Six Questions with Nick Thieneman (Young Widows, Black God, Brain Banger)

What is your current set up? Guitars/ basses, pedals, strings, picks, & amps. (feel free to keep any secrets you deem necessary)
Amps: 2 x Ampeg 200T
Speakers: 2 x Eminence Legend 15”
Basses: 1978 Gibson RD Artist, Custom First Act Delgada
Pedals: Bluebeard Fuzz Box, Line 6 MS-1, Boss GE-7, Boss TU-3, Boss NS-2, Vintage Rat, Digitech Digiverb
Strings: GHS Bass Boomers
Picks: Dunlop Nylon 1mm
How long have you been playing?
I’ve been playing bass for about 10 years now, but I’ve played guitar since I was 12 years old.
Do you have any music training?
I took guitar lessons for about 3 months before I was told not to come back until I was serious about “Polly Wolly Doodle”. That’s all of any formal music training I’ve had, I self taught myself everything after that.
Who are your influences?
As far as influences go, Nirvana commanded me to pick up a guitar. Then I found Wipers, Sonic Youth, Melvins and it all spiraled out of control from there. In general I find lots of music inspiring, that list grows every day, but I am SUPER picky.
What piece of your “rig” can you not live without?
If I didn’t have my Gibson RD Artist handy, I might freak out.
Do you prefer recording or playing live?
I love to record but playing live is more my thing. There’s an certain energy that comes with playing live that I need to survive, I crave it all the damn time.
Thanks to Nick for doing this.
